Jane Eyre essay on Open Endings

3rd January 2020

I recently wrote a short essay for the Open Endings series, in which I imagine an alternative ending to Jane Eyre. I first read Jane Eyre when I was at school and, like so many, my interest at the time was in the love story between Jane and Rochester. But now I feel quite differently about it, and I find myself more interested in the women in the book, the relationships between them, and what that could mean for Jane.

The essay was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 – you can listen at the link below, where I share my thoughts on the novel and the essay itself. I’d love to hear what you think.
