30 years ago this year, I published my first novel, Wideacre. To celebrate this, my publishers have created this beautiful anniversary edition which is on sale 19th April in the UK and 2nd May in the US and Canada. I have written a new preface for the novel and it has been a luxury to reflect on the novel I started in my late twenties when I was living in a small town with a newborn baby, trying to finish my PhD thesis.
